SANGEAN PR-D3L

This radio receives stations in Medium Waves, Long Waves and FM.
Positive aspects: It offers Long Waves and receives the stations, in this band, exceptionally well. It is very sensitive in Medium Waves, better than the excellent, similar sized, Roadstar TRA-2350P. With some help from the Eton AN-200 loop antenna, I received in Marathon area, Greece,  many Middle East and North African stations, during daytime.
In the following photo, a moment when a very good reception was achieved, of a 20 KW Israeli station, situated 1260 Km away from the receiving post, at midday .
Negative aspects: Not good in FM. Compared to Roadstar, it’s a shame. A reason could be the short length of the telescopic antenna. In AM does not offer 1 KHz tuning step, only 9 KHz, so one looses the advantage of the extra Medium Wave coverage up to 1710 KHz. Sound is good, only according to the sticker on the radio. Although the speaker’s size is o.k. the result is weak. The bass and tremble knobs help a little. A continuous hiss, that is present even when the volume control is off, makes things worst. Especially during nighttime, with low volume settings, this hiss noise is irritating. Finally, it looks ugly.
Hymettus Mountain hosts antenna installations for television and FM, targeting the audience of Athens. Sangean PR-D3L, has no problem to catch FM programs, when it is located that closed.

TWO MORE SMALL RADIOS COMPARISONS

Two more small radios are SONY SRF-M37V and SONY SRF-86.  Again, at the same place and about the same time, I checked the reception of the Middle East stations referred in the previous post. The digital SONY performed quite near to the SRF-59. It is worth to note that this handy radio is not selective at all.  Being in Marathon area, which is about 10 Km to the transmitting site of ERT, 729 KHz, Aghios Stephanos, I could receive that signal, in a range of 150 KHz, of the dial.
The analogue SONY, was the clear winner as it managed to receive better all programs and what’s more in the difficult lower part of MW band, it caught  Kol Israel, 531 KHz, Tel Aviv. The other four radios could not detect even the carrier. This radio is also very quiet compared with the SANGEAN which emits some noise from the digital display. Also its tuning knob is soft and easy to use, contrary to the stiff feel of SRF-59.  The SRF-86 outperformed also in FM reception, being sensitive, selective and musically rich. Regarding FM stereo reception SRF-M37V demonstrated a hiss sound in many programs.
Finally Sony SRF-86 is the best small radio regarding its overall performance, as a receiver. Nevertheless, Sangean DT-250 comes close, but as it provides more facilities such as PLL tuning, memories and speaker, maybe it becomes the first choice.

THREE SMALL RADIOS COMPARISONS

The three small radios I used, were SONY SRF-59, SANGEAN DT-250, SONY ICF-S10MK2, and I tested them only in terms of sensitivity. Scanning MW band in Marathon area, at the sea side, around 12 o’ clock noon, four Arabic broadcasts were found.

  774 KHz
Abis
Egypt
  819 KHz
Batrah
Egypt
  864 KHz
Santah
Egypt
1125 KHz
El Beida
Libya

Signal strength was weak for the Egyptians and fair for the Libyan, which, by the way, is under control by the Western-backed rebels.
SRF-59 and DT-250 achieved about the same sensitivity, with the Sangean showing a slight superiority.

ICF-S10MK2 a nice radio otherwise, with very good speaker sound, received 1125 KHz, but in the case of the other fequencies detected only the carrier.
